Tom Swoboda

Tom Swoboda born in Upper Silesia. In the years 1995-1998 he studied at the Faculty of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. He was a co-founder and host of the Szara Gallery in Cieszyn in 2002-2004. Co-founder of The Underground Art Center in Clitheroe, Great Britain (2004-2005). He is also the originator of the international artistic residency project Incydenty in Cieszyn, Czech Cieszyn, Bielsko-Biała and Great Britain, which took place in 2005-2009.

Finished PhD studies in 2023 at the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. He currently works and lives in Cieszyn, where he also co-runs the School of Art and Thinking. “(...) In his practice, the artist often focuses on issues that, in terms of history, or due to their nature, have ended or do not have any raison d’être, and which can only be recreated from the standpoint of memory, conversation or premonition. 

He wants to reach - as he says - real experience, language, body anatomy or territory. Thus, projects with a strange identity are created, which are not clearly anchored in the field of art or the broadly understood social space (non-sport, non-architecture, areligious).
