Nils Alix-Tabeling

Nils Alix-Tabeling’s works are based on historical research, speculative history, and the creation of alternative versions of myths relating to issues that have been suppressed by customs, politics, and religion—queer, transsexuality, feminism (from Heliogabalus, through Pierrot and Harlequin, to Rosa Luxemburg and Ulrike Meinhoff). The artist's practice is characterized by a contemporary approach to drawing from and mixing different historical eras, cultures, and styles, from pagan antiquity and the Middle Ages, through Mannerism, Baroque, and Rococo, to Art Deco. His hybridical objects—reminiscent of furniture or decorative household items—are often brought to life in performances resembling magical rituals. They are a mix of traditional techniques such as bronze casting, wood carving, metalwork with 3D printing and found objects. They combine elements hand-carved by the artist, costumes made by him, cast scented candles, with organic materials such as herbs and weeds, goat guts, shells, pearls, but also crystals and other elements from the area of alchemy, shamanism and witchcraft.
