Alina Szapocznikow was born on May 16, 1926, in Kalisz, Poland.
Before the war, she lived in Pabianice. During the Holocaust, she survived the ghettos in Pabianice and Łódź, the German Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz, the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and the Theresienstadt ghetto.
After the war, she studied sculpture in Prague and Paris. In the 1950s, she returned to Poland and continued her artistic work. She passed away in 1973 in Passy, France.
