Magdalena Abakanowicz was one of the most renowned Polish artists of the 20th century, who gained international recognition for her original, monumental forms made from soft fibers. Although she began her career as a painter, she soon turned to creating large-scale, spatial objects from dyed sisal—textiles with an organic texture that resembled fragments of skin or bodies. These works, later called "Abakans," broke away from the traditional idea of textiles as flat, decorative elements. Instead, they were sculptural, expressive, and overwhelming in their scale.

Her international breakthrough came in the 1960s, with a key moment being the gold medal she received at the São Paulo Biennale in 1965. This achievement marked the beginning of her global career—her works would go on to be exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world. The São Paulo Biennale was not only an artistic success but also a symbolic moment that helped bridge the gap between Eastern and Western art during the Cold War era.
