MEETINGS: "Guardians of Light". Michał Siarek × I AM SORRY DAVE. A site-specific performance by Kuba Słomkowski, featuring Gilbert Bautista Ortiz
Light phenomena #4. Slettnes, 2022
Michał Siarka’s photographic project grew out of his experiences at a lighthouse in the Far North—observing the rhythm of its light and optics, as well as the practice of keeping watch. As lighthouses become increasingly automated, the question of who watches over the light—and our safety—human or machine, takes on new significance. This theme is explored in Kuba Słomkowski’s site-specific performance, which expands upon his project I AM SORRY DAVE and features guest violist Gilbert Bautista Ortiz. The reference to HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey opens up a perspective on technology that sees, communicates, and makes decisions.
The performance Guardians of the Light brings together the physics and metaphorical dimensions of light, human beings, and increasingly automated technology. Electronics, voice, and acoustic viola will converge within the exhibition space, while music becomes a means of interpreting the photographs. It expands the exhibition experience through sound, rhythm, and performance, opening it up to audiences interested in experimental music, film, and audiovisual culture.
