MEETINGS: XXXVIII Feminist Seminar: "The Hearing Trumpet. Emancipatory Themes and Surrealism"

The event will be interpreted into Polish Sign Language (PJM).

Many female artists participated in the surrealist movement, i.e.Leonora Carrington, Leonor Fini, Toyen, Dorothea Tanning, and Lee Miller. One of the artists most committed to feminist ideas was Leonora Carrington. In 1974, she published the novel "The Hearing Trumpet" -a manifesto of women and excluded beings, touching on the topic of eejism in a humorous way. In 1985, Whitney Chadwick published a book "Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement". Through interviews with artists still alive at the time, the author managed to revive the memory of their work and art. We wish to encourage discussion and reflection on the presence of emancipatory themes in the work of those who created in the spirit of surrealism, and to consider surrealism as a way of narrating the world and conveying important messages through the use of this language. We welcome submissions concerning both historical works and approaches, as well as contemporary practices encompassing all media, from drawing and collage, through film, to the performing arts.
