Szczunie. A Performance by Emma Szumlas and Kamil Wesołowski

Szczunie. A Performance by Emma Szumlas and Kamil Wesołowski

The performative tour by Emma Szumlas and Kamil Wesołowski will facilitate the transfer of meanings and the generation of new contexts within the exhibition space. Live-produced codes will activate relationships between the elements of the display. Through their interventions, the artists will reveal nuances and hidden aspects of the exhibition. At once safeguarding and choreographically expanding its boundaries, these actions will open unexpected perspectives and moments of surprise.

Emma Szumlas (b. 2000) is an interdisciplinary artist working with fiction and the theory of abjection (understood both as an object or effect that provokes disgust or revulsion, and as an action — abjection — referring to a process of rejection or expulsion). Her practice focuses on working across various media and incorporates artistic research. She holds a BA from the Faculty of Media Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Her performative works have been presented at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, Foksal Gallery Foundation, Le Guern Gallery, Exgirlfriend Gallery in Berlin, FHNW in Basel, and during Warsaw Gallery Weekend.

Kamil Wesołowski (b. 1996) is a graduate of the first edition of Kem School and the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, with which they are currently affiliated. They describe themself as an artist, fashion designer, performer, woman, and poet. Wesołowski’s works address issues of language and gender stereotypes, confronting myths and pop culture, and balancing between art and fashion.
