The Body Falls to Pieces / Martyna Baranowicz, Emil Bucki, Ewa Dąbkowska, Klaudia Kiełbasa, Agata Nowosielska, Klaudia Prabucka, Igor Przybylski, Angelika Rudak
The exhibition "The Body Falls to Pieces" explores the roles played by representations of tearing, cutting off, cutting out, gouging, rubbing, squeezing, and framing fragments of the body in the works of eight artists: Martyna Baranowicz (b. 1992), Emil Bucki (b. 1999), Ewa Dąbkowska (b. 1998), Klaudia Kiełbasa (b. 2000), Agata Nowosielska (b. 1982), Klaudia Prabucka (b. 1997), Igor Przybylski (b. 1974), and Angelika Rudak (b. 1999).
The starting point is Linda Nochlin’s essay "The Body in Pieces," in which the scholar argues that representations of dismembered bodies are the very essence of modernism. "Yet the loss of a whole is something more than a tragedy. Modernity itself is constructed from this loss." (...) "It was the French Revolution—the pivotal event that ushered in the modern era—that transformed the fragment into a positive motif, rather than a negative one." (Linda Nochlin, The Body in Pieces, Polish edition 2025, p. 11).
